In 2015 Chuck sold the investment management part of his company and formed a new division of CJ&A called “Second Opinion” which offers unbiased evaluations of financial plans.

Since 1980, Chuck has worked to serve the financial planning, business planning and investment counseling needs of individuals, families, and small business. He specializes in retirement, estate, investment and special situation planning, as well as small business consulting.

An energetic and inspiring entrepreneur, Chuck has years of experience working with small business and finance, including 33 years as a CFP®. Originally from New Jersey, Chuck has made Portland his home since 1976. He is a graduate of Bucknell University with a degree in Commerce and Finance.

Chuck began his career in the medical field with Baxter/Travenol Laboratories and in 1964 he founded Extracorporeal Medical Specialties, Inc., a firm specializing in artificial organs and kidney dialysis. He developed the second disposable hemo-dialyzer and was one of the first lay-persons admitted to the American Society of Artificial Internal Organs. After 5 years his company had 165 employees and went public.

After leaving the medical field Chuck entered the field of investment real estate. In 1980 he made the transition into financial planning and became a representative of a large national financial planning firm where he quickly achieved the position of District Manager. From 1984-1990 he was a partner with Interwest Financial Advisors, Inc.

Chuck’s competence and experience in analyzing and developing financial, business & marketing plans has led to memberships in numerous professional associations:

  • As an active member of the Institute for Certified Financial Planners (ICFP), Chuck was founder (1984) and past President of the ICFP/Oregon Society.
  • As a member of the International Association for Financial Planning (IAFP), Chuck was twice elected to the Board of Directors of the Oregon Chapter between 1982 and 1984. In 1985 he was admitted to the IAFP Registry for Financial Planning Practitioners.
  • In February 1987, Chuck was appointed to the Board of Appeals of the International Board of Standards and Practices for Certified Financial Planners, Inc. (IBCFP) and served in that position until 1989.
  • Additionally, Chuck has had many articles published and frequently conducts retirement and estate planning seminars. For many years he wrote a monthly column for the Senior Tribune newspaper.
  • Listed in the Consumers Research Council of America’s Guide to America’s Top Financial Planners.

A serial entrepreneur, Chuck has founded ten companies and has been a director at four others. He has served as a consultant for companies in the following industries: medical, land development, restaurant, beverage distribution, general manufacturing, real estate, construction and others.


In both 2008 and 2009 Chuck was honored with the NFIB “Small Business Champion of the year” award. In 2007 he received recognition award for his 25 years of membership with the Financial Planning Association (FPA). May 2006 he received the Eldon Shafer “Champion of Small Business” award for outstanding contributions to Small Business in Oregon by the Oregon Small Business Development Center Network. In 1968 he was named one the Outstanding Young Men of America.
